About
the Artist
As young child, artist Haroldo
Grossi passed countless hours drawing combat scenes
and designing paper soldiers based on historical
battles. "My interest in history continued
into adulthood" , he says, "and is expressed
in my paintings that combine icons of monuents and
battles with scenes from contemporary day-to-day
life". In a strange and fascinating style of
figuration, Grossi paints what seem to be living
images - in place of traditional, representational
human forms, Grossi´s characters are flat,
card-like figures with painted costumes, inhabiting
incongrusly three-dimensional scenes. Much like
the paper dolls of children, at once intimate and
anonymous, these improbable figures reenact historically
significant or culturally meaningful occurrences
of the past, filling the roles of generals and prisoneres,
clergy and commoners. With humor, skill, and great
imagination, Grossi rearranges flat and three-dimensional
space, intermingling child´s play with the
gravity of history. Born in São Paulo, Brazil,
he studied at the Pan American School for the Arts
after receiving his degree in Veterinary Medicine. |

Haroldo
de Figueiredo Mandia Grossi, nasceu em
São Paulo, Brasil em 1962.
Desde muito pequeno demonstrou acentuado interesse
em desenhar e passava horas a fio recortando e pintando
soldadinhos de papel que se transformavam em personagens
de grandes batalhas.
Centenas destes desenhos e soldadinhos de papel
estão preservados até hoje graças
aos seus pais que já vislumbravam uma criatividade
muito marcante naqueles desenhos.
Antes mesmo de terminar a Faculade de Medicina Veterinária,
já se dedicava a sua outra grande paixão:
os animais.
Logo após sua graduação, cursou
por um ano Desenho e Pintura na escola Pan Americana
de Artes.
O entrelaçamento dos temas históricos
e a Arte sempre o fascinou e no decorrer dos anos
se dedicou ao estudo destes temas.
Agora, aos 42 anos de idade, foi surpreendido por
uma força muito grande que o impulsiona a
pintar e em suas obras observa-se um resgate de
sua infância, de cenas do cotidiano e de momentos
históricos. |
